Most Toronto homes use torsion springs mounted above the door; older doors may use extension springs running along the tracks. Both counterbalance the full weight of the door — often 60 to 150 kg — so the opener only has to guide it.
Springs are rated in cycles (one open and close). A standard spring lasts roughly 10,000 cycles, which is about 7–10 years for most families. Cold winters make the steel more brittle, which is why so many springs break between December and March.
