Why springs fail
Most torsion springs are rated for about ten thousand open and close cycles. In a busy household that can mean seven to ten years. Cold Toronto winters make steel more brittle, which is why so many springs break between December and February.
The warning signs
Watch for a visible gap in the coil, a door that feels heavy when lifted by hand, a door that rises unevenly, jerky movement, loud squeaking from above the door, an opener that strains, and a door that slams shut instead of lowering gently.
What to do
Stop using the door and keep it closed. Springs hold enormous tension and should only be replaced by a trained technician. Call us for a free quote by phone and we will replace the spring and balance-test the door.
